Then we text each other about "dangling participles" for a while.

That was a great time and all, but you know what is really great? I know it's bad journalistic form, but I'm going to tell you.

Having the type of relationship with people who you rarely see, but can pick up right where you left off, even though four years have passed since your last conversation.

I went to the Jones - Morrow wedding this past weekend with my fiance, Sarah, and sat across the table from a friend that I hadn't talked to to since high school graduation in May 2005. Sure, we had a lot of catching up to do, but that didn't matter; we were able to squeeze four years of conversation into 30 minutes, and I am pretty sure nothing important was left out.

That conversation made me think about how many others out there have that type of relationship with somebody (family excluded).

And now here I am at work, blogging - because I can get away with it - reminiscing about old high school times and the people I surrounded myself with. There were countless nights spent in basements playing spin the bottle, Halo nights at the Boks, nights spent toliet papering teachers houses and parties in garages. But now, with two collegiate degrees almost under my belt and over 1000 nights away from my lonely hometown of Antwerp, Ohio, I've turned my back on everything I've left behind and created a new life and a new name for myself.

I don't regret loosing touch with the 54 people I graduated with or the 40 or so others I considered friends. In fact, I've got a whole new set to play with. And, no offense, Antwerp, but these people are a lot cooler (with the excpetion of a few).

To conclude: Antwerp, you can keep your townies and hold my memories, but you'll never take my freedom.

--
Stromski

Post Script: Ohio, as a whole, you're not much better either.

New digital magazine, better or the same?

In an attempt to try and do something new and different with emYOU! You know the song that just makes you feel good to be alive. It's like when that song comes on you don't have a care in the world and you usually wish you had an ice cold one or two right beside you. It reminds of you hanging with your friends...doing whatever it is you and your friends do. Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" was definitely the 2008 summer anthem, but what's your for this year?

Well...I a good friend of mine and emYOU! The Magazine posted the following on twitter today:

If this song doesn't make you move around a bit and feel all good inside, you've got issues. Let's just say it changed my life and is not only my 2009 summer anthem, it could be every summer anthem from here on out.

Speaking of which, follow me and these cool people on Twitter:

@timboslice
@bsaeed
@emyou
@usurvive
@thebtgoeson
@mitdakayo
@ashley_santrock
@rmercader
@mfstromski
@jallen6

*Yes, I know there are more of you out there, I could make the list really long, so just add yourself in the comments!!

emYOU! Founded in 1970 by students at Eastern Michigan University, SOS has evolved from its roots as a peer-counseling program into an agency whose comprehensive services assist families in their move from homelessness to self-sufficiency and permanent, stable housing. Today, SOS occupies four programs and administrative sites in Washtenaw County. In case you haven't heard, the economy has seen better days. So, we couldn't think of a better organization to help out in tough times like these.

There will be a release party at the end of July (updates and specific info to come) and calendars will be on sale for $10 each Monday, August 3. The Magazine, one of the most trusted names in entertainment media servicing Eastern Michigan University and the city of Ypsilanti, will be producing a 2009-2010 school year calendar.

In addition to spotlighting all the important dates the students need to know throughout the hectic school year, the calendar will also showcase 12 of EMU’s most talented and beautiful women in a classy, visually aesthetic way.

Our search to find the perfect women for this project will not be an easy one, so we’re having a Casting Call to find the best fit co-eds for the job. After the Casting Call takes place, we will choose the 25 girls who receive the highest scores from our panel. (The panel will consist of a professional photographer, three talent scouts and the two owners of emYOU! The Magazine.) From the 25, it’s your responsibility to Rock the Vote! The 12 finalists chosen to appear in the calendar will be voted on by the public, so it’s your responsibility to sell yourself if you want to make it.

The Casting Call
The Casting Call will take place on Wednesday, June 3, in the Eastern Michigan University Student Center Auditorium from Noon-4 p.m.*

We are looking for women who are current EMU students, smart, beautiful, and exude confidence and self-assurance. (And we do recognize beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors.)

We expect you to come prepared to be photographed, wearing a solid-colored tank or camisole, form-fitting jeans/pants and light make-up.

There are a couple forms to fill out, so please schedule a few extra minutes for that. Once the forms are complete, you will be escorted on stage and asked a few questions by the panel before being photographed.

The Callback
We will notify the top 25 by phone and/or email no later than Monday, June 8, to let them know if they have made the cuts.

Establishing the Top 12
Once the top 25 are chosen, their headshots and a small bio will be placed online at http://www.emyouthemagazine.com for voting. Voting will be open until June 26, and it is up to the final 25 to get as many votes as possible. You can vote daily and drive your friends and family to do the same.

The top 10 vote-getters will automatically earn a spot into the calendar, but the professional panel will appoint the final two spots.

Extras
In addition to being featured in the inaugural edition of the Annual Girls of emYOU! Calendar, the 12 chosen finalists will receive a CD of their shoot, free hair and make-up by Thomas Blondi Salons, as well as many other cross-promotional opportunities including feature appearances at the July release party, where we’ll be announcing the cover model for the calendar, and many others. You will also earn a 20% commission on all individual calendar sales.**

Contact jeremy.allen@emyouthemagazine.com for further details.

*If this time doesn’t work for you, email jeremy.allen@emyouthemagazine as soon as possible.
**Meaning: sales which you personally execute, previously arranged with emYOU! The bright colors wouldn’t let you look away and the wisely used objects simply made you think.

This performance is put on every year by the EMU College of Technology's Apparel, Textiles and Merchandising 379 class. The class is only offered during winter semester. ATM 379 teaches the student how to develop, prepare, and execute a fashion show in all aspects.

Graduating senior Melissa Patton hopes to further her career in fashion through her course of study including Apparel, Textile and Merchandising. Compass 2009 is the third show she's modeled in and has been a helping hand backstage.

“I want be a work in merchandising and product development, but I just feel so comfortable when I model," Patton said. "I love the spotlight.”

Stacey Ruff, junior, started on her line ‘Ego Centric’ about a year ago. Ruff was more than excited for everyone to see the corset designs she and her partner and crime Ericka Wilson created.

“This is my first fashion show and I just want to live in the moment. I have always admired designers and now its my turn to be seen. My family gave me the name ‘Ego Centric’ because they say I’m self centered,” said Ruff.

Ruff and Wilson won the Most Creativity Design award.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VPtdgV-ge3g/Se3_XuFdr2I/AAAAAAAAANc/BrxIadb85ms/s320/cot1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5327194717222186850" />

The Most Memorable Design award went to Shannon Smith for her mesmerizing cup cake ensemble.“My line ‘Poptown Salvaged’ has all recycled elements and features really bright colors and large elements. I guess you can say I like to dabble in design but I love merchandising,” said Smith, who rocked her own original piece; a pink, origami dress.

The scene “Fashion Dolls” incorporated sexy corsets, some with ruffles, which added a sense of flirtiness to them. This style gave a new, literal meaning to the 'cold shoulder.'

The “Mannequins” scene featured hooded dresses with the back out, one even in the style of a wedding dress, and dropped V-neck minis. The crowd loved the many sides of a woman.

“The Premiere” showed off a button down shirt turned into a high waist-skirt. Dresses with a chandelier angle cut down the back was a crowd pleaser. The leotard paired with leggings definitely was a bold choice. But the Tyra Banks/ Hammer pants are not making a comeback.

Throughout the show, Eastern students showed their true talent as being able to think outside the box. This was not an ordinary show of the hottest fashions, but a show letting the world know it's okay to use what you've got at home and make it work. Remember, a fashion statement isn’t only about fashion, it’s about the statement.

More photos from the Compass 2009 Runway Show can be viewed at http://www.emich.edu/cot/compass2009.

Heather Han named Mac Female Scholar Athlete

Congratulations to Heather Han! With the focus of the night being the models of NOiR, the show was sensationally 40-minutes late, but stunning.

Brittany Kozerski, president of NOiR, brought in there 10th year of the NOiR Fashion Show with culture, glamour, and a feature fearless ending of recyclable wear. Dresses were made out of old shower curtains, Meijer and Kroger grocery bags. Supporting the environment, proceeds were donated to the Nature Conservatory. The Conservatory will use the proceeds to purchase and protect close to 100 acre of Michigan land.

Even though the show was held at the U-M Union, EMU was definitely in the building. Former emYOU! The Magazine student spotlight Katrell Duncan strutted a fierce walk wearing Golden Hanger Design Clothing Line by Henry Spencer.

“This is my second year doing the NOiR show and I love it. The designs are great,” said Duncan.

Emanuel Upshaw, senior EMU student, was unquestionably the crowd-pleaser. He commanded the runway as soon as he took his first step out. The applause, screams and shrieks did not cease until he stepped off. NOiR was Upshaw's most prominant show thus far during his modeling career, but he's gained notariety from participation in EMU Fashion Week, Bowling Green Fashion Battle, and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Delta Beta Chapter Fashion Show 2009.

“This is a career for me," said Upshaw. "Come October, I’m moving to New York to pursue my modeling and acting.” The Business Management major will be graduating in April.

The 11-scene performance featured the titles of Le NOiR et Blanc (avec vert), The Glamorous, The Rebel, The Cultured, The Honey, The Hustler, The Provocateur, The Sophisticated, The Retro, The Socialite, and The Fearless.

“The Glamorous” featured mid-length flow dresses and blouses with raised feather shoulders complimented with high-waist skirts. The men wore three piece suits with the tie outside the vest. I liked it but some may think it’s too pompous.

“The Rebel” gave ladies a chance to utilize those holey stockings, turning them into a fashion feature instead of a fashion faux pas, under a skirt. They may help you save money during this recession, but they are not too tasteful.

“The Hustler” was an all male scene that featured looks similar to Jim Jones and Juelez Santana with a little Diddy swag.

“The Provocateur” paid homage to the “Bedroom Goddess” letting every man in the crowd play out their own fantasies in their head. Women wore pearls, letting them be the only cover for their breast along with lace panties. The bare-chested fellas wore only boxers and socks to let the ladies minds wonder. One tip for the guys though: wrinkled boxers in the bedroom are not sexy!

“The Retro” highlighted the look of mixing patterns. Having a box circle pattern top with a box print skirt actually does work as long as the colors match. But the 'flower print' still hasn’t made a comeback yet. Although the hippie, tie-dye dress with colored stocking may work… depending on what club you are going to.

“The Socialite” established that the hooker dress is out and the party dress, Kimora-Lee-Simmons-style is in! Ladies, leaving the men with a silhouette of what they could have is perfect. Showing too much will only get a dance at the club, not an offer for dinner later.

NOiR did a great job celebrating their 10th fashion show. By the end of the show everyone left stimulated with a sense of fashion and how to truly own what they wear!

emYOU! at Relay For Life

emYOU! participated in Eastern Michigan University's annual Relay For Life event this past weekend. He finished the game with 13 points and seven assists.

"Coach [Ernie Zeigler] kept calling ball screens for me when after I hit my first couple shots in that second half," Harman said. "Eastern had beat us twice already this season, but we didn't lack any confidence. We went in there like it was any other game. We scouted well and we executed our plays well."

Eastern standout sophomore, and recent All-MAC selection, Brandon Bowdry led the Eagles with 13 points and six rebounds in 35 minutes of action, emerging freshman Antonio Green chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds. Green went 4-for-9 from the field including 3-for-5 from long distance.

"I was expecting them to play me really tough in the paint area, which they did," said Bowdry. "We played a very physical back-and-forth style in our first two games against them this season, so it wasn't anything new."

While the physical play in the paint didn't noticably affect Bowdry, junior center Brandon Dobbins--who was playing in front of his hometown--missed two layups and a dunk early in the contest. EMU Head Coach Charles Ramsey said the misses "drastically changed how the game went."

"Those kinds of plays are deflating to one team and inflating to the other," Ramsey said. "When you miss shots like that they linger, and we never really recovered from those, while Central capitalized on them."

The Eagles were able to pull within six points with just over 6 minutes remaining, but back-to-back three-point plays by CMU leading scorer and rebounder Marcus Van sealed the victory for the Chips. Van notched 17 points and five rebounds in the victory.

"We knew we had to shut down their offensive post game to be successful," Van said. "We scouted well and saw that once you shut down their post game they just start jacking up shots from anywhere."

Eastern had won four straight contests before today's loss. The Eagles finish the 2008-09 season with an 8-24 record (6-10 in MAC play).

"It's time to go back to the drawing board," Ramsey said. "We get Carlos [Medlock] back next season. With him, Brandon, Dobbins and the emergence of our young players and the talent we have coming in, we're in good shape."

Renting 101: Win a FREE apartment!

It's baaaaack! You and I both know you've got nothing better to do.
2. The athletes are raising money for Operation Homefront, which helps families of those who are over seas.
3. When and where else are you going to see Division I athletes absolutely embarrasing themselves for the greater good?? No football jokes here please, and while we're on that subject Coach English is a MAN and I can guarantee a change in the right direction next season...his recruiting class was great and...well, let's just say when Coach English spoke at the men's basketball game last week, I got chills because he was so intense and passionate...good things are a comin'.
4. There's going to be a huge after party at Club Divine with great drink specials all night long.
5. In this weeks issue of MetroTimes, Freman Hendrix was one of 10 mayoral candidates featured. The candidates were each given a questionnaire to be answered. Unfortunately, the printed version is fairly limited and in my opinion...garbage, but the online version definitely makes up for what is lacking in print. We all know the mayor of Detroit is way more than just the mayor of Detroit, especially in this historic election. You commuters who live in Detroit and can vote, don't forget to: Feb. 24, 2009!!
