Then we text each other about "dangling participles" for a while.

That was a great time and all, but you know what is really great? I know it's bad journalistic form, but I'm going to tell you.

Having the type of relationship with people who you rarely see, but can pick up right where you left off, even though four years have passed since your last conversation.

I went to the Jones - Morrow wedding this past weekend with my fiance, Sarah, and sat across the table from a friend that I hadn't talked to to since high school graduation in May 2005. Sure, we had a lot of catching up to do, but that didn't matter; we were able to squeeze four years of conversation into 30 minutes, and I am pretty sure nothing important was left out.

That conversation made me think about how many others out there have that type of relationship with somebody (family excluded).

And now here I am at work, blogging - because I can get away with it - reminiscing about old high school times and the people I surrounded myself with. There were countless nights spent in basements playing spin the bottle, Halo nights at the Boks, nights spent toliet papering teachers houses and parties in garages. But now, with two collegiate degrees almost under my belt and over 1000 nights away from my lonely hometown of Antwerp, Ohio, I've turned my back on everything I've left behind and created a new life and a new name for myself.

I don't regret loosing touch with the 54 people I graduated with or the 40 or so others I considered friends. In fact, I've got a whole new set to play with. And, no offense, Antwerp, but these people are a lot cooler (with the excpetion of a few).

To conclude: Antwerp, you can keep your townies and hold my memories, but you'll never take my freedom.

--
Stromski

Post Script: Ohio, as a whole, you're not much better either.

New digital magazine, better or the same?

In an attempt to try and do something new and different with emYOU! You know the song that just makes you feel good to be alive. It's like when that song comes on you don't have a care in the world and you usually wish you had an ice cold one or two right beside you. It reminds of you hanging with your friends...doing whatever it is you and your friends do. Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" was definitely the 2008 summer anthem, but what's your for this year?

Well...I a good friend of mine and emYOU! Today, SOS occupies four programs and administrative sites in Washtenaw County. In case you haven't heard, the economy has seen better days. So, we couldn't think of a better organization to help out in tough times like these.

There will be a release party at the end of July (updates and specific info to come) and calendars will be on sale for $10 each Monday, August 3. The Magazine, one of the most trusted names in entertainment media servicing Eastern Michigan University and the city of Ypsilanti, will be producing a 2009-2010 school year calendar.

In addition to spotlighting all the important dates the students need to know throughout the hectic school year, the calendar will also showcase 12 of EMU’s most talented and beautiful women in a classy, visually aesthetic way.

Our search to find the perfect women for this project will not be an easy one, so we’re having a Casting Call to find the best fit co-eds for the job. After the Casting Call takes place, we will choose the 25 girls who receive the highest scores from our panel. (The panel will consist of a professional photographer, three talent scouts and the two owners of emYOU! The Magazine.) From the 25, it’s your responsibility to Rock the Vote! The 12 finalists chosen to appear in the calendar will be voted on by the public, so it’s your responsibility to sell yourself if you want to make it.

The Casting Call
The Casting Call will take place on Wednesday, June 3, in the Eastern Michigan University Student Center Auditorium from Noon-4 p.m.*

We are looking for women who are current EMU students, smart, beautiful, and exude confidence and self-assurance. (And we do recognize beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors.)

We expect you to come prepared to be photographed, wearing a solid-colored tank or camisole, form-fitting jeans/pants and light make-up.

There are a couple forms to fill out, so please schedule a few extra minutes for that. Once the forms are complete, you will be escorted on stage and asked a few questions by the panel before being photographed.

The Callback
We will notify the top 25 by phone and/or email no later than Monday, June 8, to let them know if they have made the cuts.

Establishing the Top 12
Once the top 25 are chosen, their headshots and a small bio will be placed online at http://www.emyouthemagazine.com for voting. You can vote daily and drive your friends and family to do the same.

The top 10 vote-getters will automatically earn a spot into the calendar, but the professional panel will appoint the final two spots.

Extras
In addition to being featured in the inaugural edition of the Annual Girls of emYOU! Calendar, the 12 chosen finalists will receive a CD of their shoot, free hair and make-up by Thomas Blondi Salons, as well as many other cross-promotional opportunities including feature appearances at the July release party, where we’ll be announcing the cover model for the calendar, and many others. Live, Mahoney's energy is as infectious as their songs, built upon the framework of Phillips' pulsing rhythms and Martin's strong melodic hooks. The bright colors wouldn’t let you look away and the wisely used objects simply made you think.

This performance is put on every year by the EMU College of Technology's Apparel, Textiles and Merchandising 379 class. The class is only offered during winter semester. ATM 379 teaches the student how to develop, prepare, and execute a fashion show in all aspects.

Graduating senior Melissa Patton hopes to further her career in fashion through her course of study including Apparel, Textile and Merchandising. Compass 2009 is the third show she's modeled in and has been a helping hand backstage.

“I want be a work in merchandising and product development, but I just feel so comfortable when I model," Patton said. "I love the spotlight.”

Stacey Ruff, junior, started on her line ‘Ego Centric’ about a year ago. Ruff was more than excited for everyone to see the corset designs she and her partner and crime Ericka Wilson created.

“This is my first fashion show and I just want to live in the moment. I have always admired designers and now its my turn to be seen. My family gave me the name ‘Ego Centric’ because they say I’m self centered,” said Ruff.

Ruff and Wilson won the Most Creativity Design award.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VPtdgV-ge3g/Se3_XuFdr2I/AAAAAAAAANc/BrxIadb85ms/s320/cot1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5327194717222186850" />

The Most Memorable Design award went to Shannon Smith for her mesmerizing cup cake ensemble.“My line ‘Poptown Salvaged’ has all recycled elements and features really bright colors and large elements. I guess you can say I like to dabble in design but I love merchandising,” said Smith, who rocked her own original piece; a pink, origami dress.

The scene “Fashion Dolls” incorporated sexy corsets, some with ruffles, which added a sense of flirtiness to them. This style gave a new, literal meaning to the 'cold shoulder.'

The “Mannequins” scene featured hooded dresses with the back out, one even in the style of a wedding dress, and dropped V-neck minis. The crowd loved the many sides of a woman.

“The Premiere” showed off a button down shirt turned into a high waist-skirt. Dresses with a chandelier angle cut down the back was a crowd pleaser. The leotard paired with leggings definitely was a bold choice. But the Tyra Banks/ Hammer pants are not making a comeback.

Throughout the show, Eastern students showed their true talent as being able to think outside the box. This was not an ordinary show of the hottest fashions, but a show letting the world know it's okay to use what you've got at home and make it work. Remember, a fashion statement isn’t only about fashion, it’s about the statement.

More photos from the Compass 2009 Runway Show can be viewed at http://www.emich.edu/cot/compass2009.

Heather Han named Mac Female Scholar Athlete

Congratulations to Heather Han! Last week, Han was named Mac Female Scholar Athlete of the Week. For the first time in EMU's history, Han helped the Eagles sweep the regular season series from Central Michigan University. Han rose above the other nine nominees with her honorable grade point average and outstanding play. Han lead the Eagles to their first victory over CMU with a three-run home run to center field. Check out Han's student spotlight in this month's emYOU! http://emyouthemagazine.com/student.html

Bored...... With the focus of the night being the models of NOiR, the show was sensationally 40-minutes late, but stunning.

Brittany Kozerski, president of NOiR, brought in there 10th year of the NOiR Fashion Show with culture, glamour, and a feature fearless ending of recyclable wear. Dresses were made out of old shower curtains, Meijer and Kroger grocery bags. Supporting the environment, proceeds were donated to the Nature Conservatory. The Conservatory will use the proceeds to purchase and protect close to 100 acre of Michigan land.

Even though the show was held at the U-M Union, EMU was definitely in the building. Former emYOU! The Magazine student spotlight Katrell Duncan strutted a fierce walk wearing Golden Hanger Design Clothing Line by Henry Spencer.

“This is my second year doing the NOiR show and I love it. The designs are great,” said Duncan.

Emanuel Upshaw, senior EMU student, was unquestionably the crowd-pleaser. He commanded the runway as soon as he took his first step out. The applause, screams and shrieks did not cease until he stepped off. NOiR was Upshaw's most prominant show thus far during his modeling career, but he's gained notariety from participation in EMU Fashion Week, Bowling Green Fashion Battle, and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Delta Beta Chapter Fashion Show 2009.

“This is a career for me," said Upshaw. "Come October, I’m moving to New York to pursue my modeling and acting.” The Business Management major will be graduating in April.

The 11-scene performance featured the titles of Le NOiR et Blanc (avec vert), The Glamorous, The Rebel, The Cultured, The Honey, The Hustler, The Provocateur, The Sophisticated, The Retro, The Socialite, and The Fearless.

“The Glamorous” featured mid-length flow dresses and blouses with raised feather shoulders complimented with high-waist skirts. The men wore three piece suits with the tie outside the vest. I liked it but some may think it’s too pompous.

“The Rebel” gave ladies a chance to utilize those holey stockings, turning them into a fashion feature instead of a fashion faux pas, under a skirt. They may help you save money during this recession, but they are not too tasteful.

“The Hustler” was an all male scene that featured looks similar to Jim Jones and Juelez Santana with a little Diddy swag.

“The Provocateur” paid homage to the “Bedroom Goddess” letting every man in the crowd play out their own fantasies in their head. Women wore pearls, letting them be the only cover for their breast along with lace panties. The bare-chested fellas wore only boxers and socks to let the ladies minds wonder. One tip for the guys though: wrinkled boxers in the bedroom are not sexy!

“The Retro” highlighted the look of mixing patterns. Having a box circle pattern top with a box print skirt actually does work as long as the colors match. But the 'flower print' still hasn’t made a comeback yet. Although the hippie, tie-dye dress with colored stocking may work… depending on what club you are going to.

“The Socialite” established that the hooker dress is out and the party dress, Kimora-Lee-Simmons-style is in! Ladies, leaving the men with a silhouette of what they could have is perfect. Showing too much will only get a dance at the club, not an offer for dinner later.

NOiR did a great job celebrating their 10th fashion show. He finished the game with 13 points and seven assists.

"Coach [Ernie Zeigler] kept calling ball screens for me when after I hit my first couple shots in that second half," Harman said. "Eastern had beat us twice already this season, but we didn't lack any confidence. We went in there like it was any other game. We scouted well and we executed our plays well."

Eastern standout sophomore, and recent All-MAC selection, Brandon Bowdry led the Eagles with 13 points and six rebounds in 35 minutes of action, emerging freshman Antonio Green chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds. Green went 4-for-9 from the field including 3-for-5 from long distance.

"I was expecting them to play me really tough in the paint area, which they did," said Bowdry. "We played a very physical back-and-forth style in our first two games against them this season, so it wasn't anything new."

While the physical play in the paint didn't noticably affect Bowdry, junior center Brandon Dobbins--who was playing in front of his hometown--missed two layups and a dunk early in the contest. EMU Head Coach Charles Ramsey said the misses "drastically changed how the game went."

"Those kinds of plays are deflating to one team and inflating to the other," Ramsey said. "When you miss shots like that they linger, and we never really recovered from those, while Central capitalized on them."

The Eagles were able to pull within six points with just over 6 minutes remaining, but back-to-back three-point plays by CMU leading scorer and rebounder Marcus Van sealed the victory for the Chips. Van notched 17 points and five rebounds in the victory.

"We knew we had to shut down their offensive post game to be successful," Van said. "We scouted well and saw that once you shut down their post game they just start jacking up shots from anywhere."

Eastern had won four straight contests before today's loss. The Eagles finish the 2008-09 season with an 8-24 record (6-10 in MAC play).

"It's time to go back to the drawing board," Ramsey said. "We get Carlos [Medlock] back next season. With him, Brandon, Dobbins and the emergence of our young players and the talent we have coming in, we're in good shape."

Renting 101: Win a FREE apartment!

It's baaaaack! There's been a ton of stuff going on so let me catch you up...

February 14th was the first annual Ford Lake Frozen Leap. We raised $3500 for The American Heart Association! Not to mention, we also received some great publicity with 2 separate articles in the Ann Arbor News (Sun, Feb. 15th, we got the cover!) We also got a big shout in the Detroit Free Press with special thanks to our friends at metromix.com.

We co-sponsored this year's Battle of the Bands with Hillel and at the semi-finals, I was pretty impressed by one band in particular...Walk Your Bike. But check 'em out Reef Theory, Saturday Night Shakedown, and you be the judge. We'll see you March 10 at the Student Center for the Finals!

What else...oh, of course there's been the planning of this year's Renting 101. We've got over 20 apartment communities all at your finger tips, ready to meet you Wednesday, March 11 from 11-3pm. Yes, yes, we are giving away a FREE 1 year lease for a 2bed/2bath apartment at The Lake Shore apartments, but that's not all! Other prizes include a new laptop and a 50" plasma!! All you have to do is show up...and if that's not enough, the first 150 people will get some free pizza! Don't forget to send an email to win@emyouthemagazine.com for your chance to win.

So, that brings us back to March and emYOU! We've got an exclusive one on one with Coach English, an inexpensive alternative for St. Patty's Day, and a sit down with Oblisk, a group who's as diverse as their music. All that plus a ton more, so grab your copy!

For some reason if you haven't follow us on Twitter or joined our Facebook Fan Page yet...do so now!!
twitter.com/emyou
Facebook Fan Page

EMU Athletes to perfrom at Jock Jamz TONIGHT!

It's Thursday night, before heading out to the same ole bar, doing the same ole thing, swing by Bowen Field House tonight at 7:30.

Eastern athletes from Football to swimming/diving to women's soccer will be lip (is it syncing or singing?) and pretty much making fools of themselves for a great cause!

I've compiled a small list of reasons why you should go:

1. You and I both know you've got nothing better to do.
2. The athletes are raising money for Operation Homefront, which helps families of those who are over seas.
3. When and where else are you going to see Division I athletes absolutely embarrasing themselves for the greater good?? No football jokes here please, and while we're on that subject Coach English is a MAN and I can guarantee a change in the right direction next season...his recruiting class was great and...well, let's just say when Coach English spoke at the men's basketball game last week, I got chills because he was so intense and passionate...good things are a comin'.
4. There's going to be a huge after party at Club Divine with great drink specials all night long.
5. Last and not least, Tim and Jeremy from emYOU! In this weeks issue of MetroTimes, Freman Hendrix was one of 10 mayoral candidates featured. The candidates were each given a questionnaire to be answered. Unfortunately, the printed version is fairly limited and in my opinion...garbage, but the online version definitely makes up for what is lacking in print. We all know the mayor of Detroit is way more than just the mayor of Detroit, especially in this historic election. You commuters who live in Detroit and can vote, don't forget to: Feb. 24, 2009!!

Goodbye Cady's...

It was announced this weekend that Depot Town's, Cady's Grill has closed. Fear not though, they plan on opening a BBQ style restaurant with lower prices and apparently a more casual environment within the next 60 days.

While the food at Cady's was great, it was a little on the costly end and for most EMU students, out of their price range or reserved for "special occasions". They did however, offer a really cool fundraising program that we took advantage of a couple times over this past summer to raise some money for local charities. Basically, you could pick a night/day and they would donate 20% of a group's total bill to the charity or fundraiser of your choice. I hope with their new venture they continue the same community outreach and involvement.

As noted in the Mlive article, the new BBQ themed restaurant is to be called Wild Willy's. If anyone from the French family is paying attention, please reconsider! Alliteration is great and all, but maybe do a little more creative thinking for a name. If they plan to continue using the Frog Island BBQ sauce, why not play on that a bit? Just off the top of my head, I've got: Cross St. Station/Saloon (bring back a local legend), Riverside Roost, The Smeet. I just did a quick check, all websites available...

Anyhow, what do you think? Got any great names or memorable stories of Cady's?

National Day of Service?

While perusing my daily blogs, I came across a great topic on markmaynard.com:

National Day of Service

Check out the link for all the details, but basically Michelle Obama is calling for members of communities to get together and make a difference on Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, Jan. 19th.

So the question, I propose to you-EMU student, is what are you going to do to make a difference? No, I don't mean, you're going to switch from Natty Light to Bud Light for the day. Something a little more profound than that. Are you going to gather your dorm floor together to go to one of the events happening on campus, get together with your Fraternity or Sorority and plan a fundraiser, round up some friends and have a benefit dinner down at Cady's??

Just because you have the "day off" from class doesn't mean you should just sit and veg out all day. The group entitled, "I'd rather be in Ann Arbor" which currently has 21 pro-active members is based around EMU students who wish they could be in Ann Arbor.

I couldn't help but look into the group with further detail when I read their description:
"This group is for everyone who thinks that A2 is way more fun than Eastern."

Not sure really where to start with this, but I'm a little worried for these Eagles, because it seems they don't know the difference between and institution and a city. Ann Arbor should be compared to Ypsilanti, and UofM should be compared to EMU, right?

I guess the funny thing I can't get over is the fact that Ann Arbor is a short 10 minute drive down Washtenaw...so if you'd rather be there, jump in your car and go. Ann Arbor isn't some mythical land in a time far, far away full of unicorns and wizards. I mean, it's down the street. (and I take it back, you probably can find unicorns and wizards if you looked hard enough)
I'm sure these are the same people that live here in Ypsi, but tell people they live in Ann Arbor because it sounds cooler. So listen, if you wanted to go to UofM that bad, you should have. If you really really want to be in Ann Arbor because it's more fun, than gooooooo!

The rest of us will be trying not to step in the pieces of broken glass covered by snow while avoiding the onset of people asking for 58 cents for a bus ticket...

If you really want to have a good time in Ypsi/Eastern, make it a good time. Please stop dwelling on the fact that your NorthFace doesn't fit in here. (Because it does) and try crossing "The Moat" that is Cross St. I'm sure you'll be amazed at what you'll find...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://emyouthemagazine.blogspot.com/2009/01/really-because-thats-lame.html' title='Really? No, not really. To be honest there's only one thing I like about Michigan winters: snowboarding. I'd prefer if it were sunny and above 40, but I'll take what I can get. Unfortunately, I could never quite figure out the whole skiing thing. One death rail seemed a little easier to figure out, than two. And besides, everyone knows its way coooooler to board than ski!

There are a ton of places not too far from EMU to check out this snowy season. For beginners, Mt. Brighton and Alpine Valley are both close and have pretty good rates. For the more experienced and adventurous riders try Boyne, Schuss and Shanty Creek, Treetops.

Of course you could always just bundle up and hit the Arborland parking lot and slide down a giant mound of snow on your belly.

Welcome Back!

2009 has officially arrived and emYOU! The Magazine's first year is now in the books! As we look back it's hard to imagine all we've accomplished and as we look forward it's motivating to know how much more we can do!

I remember sitting in room 307 of the Halle Library, meeting a room full of "co-workers" for the first time. It was exciting and incredibly unnerving at the same time. Once we got through our painfully awkward intros and learned Dave's secret man crush on Justin Timberlake, the rest is, well... history.

Interviewing incredible EMU student, faculty, and alumni, talking with local and national celebrities, meeting and networking with people in the EMU/Ypsi community, and uncovering the greatness that is EMU has all been too much fun!

YOU, our readers, have helped us slowly create a voice and a sense of pride throughout the EMU community and for that we say Thank YOU! emYOU! The Magazine is created to entertain, educate, and inform you on the positive things that are directly affecting you as an EMU student. So, keep reading and continue to send us feedback and suggestions. If you haven't joined our fan page on Facebook yet, please do and don't forget to say hello! Instead, I'll just point out some of my key observations of the game.

Eastern Michigan, which lost the game 66-53 to the Grizzlies of Oakland University, came out of the gates deflated and lethargic. They never led. EMU let a known bomber from 3-point land, Erik Kangas , open the game with two 3-pointers to put the Grizzlies up 6-0, and it was over from there. Kangas came into the game shooting better than 40 percent from beyond the arc and having made four or more treys in the each of the last four games. He had 25 points and continued the streak by hitting 6-12 3-pointers last night.

This was really only a game for about four minutes toward the end of the first half. The Eagles got it to within two points once, but even when it was a two point game it wasn't close. (I know that sounds weird, but trust me, the game was ugly.)

The turnover story is getting old now, too. Solomon Farris had six turnovers in 18 minutes. Horrible. Two of his passes went nowhere near the person he said they were intending for. One landed in Swoop's lap and another in the front row of the student section. Brandon Bowdry had one of those moments, too. He had a great defensive play on one end where he stole the ball, got into the open court, then threw the ball to a phantom guy camped out in the corner. (Seriously, no one was within 10 feet of his pass. Not a ref, or a fan, or a Swoop or a basketball player.)

I'm not saying OU isn't a good team. They were a preseason favorite to win the Summit League and, at 8-6, they have the best record in their conference. But seeing as how Eastern jumped out to an 8-0 lead against then No. 10 Purdue and a 6-0 lead against a top 30 Michigan team, I expect more from Eastern against teams closer to our caliber.

A lot of these types of losses come as a result of underperformance. After the game I asked EMU Head Coach Charles Ramsey about junior center Justin Dobbins playing up to his potential.

"Plain and simply, he's not," Ramsey said. "If he doesn't start real soon, someone else will be taking his spot. I don't know who, but someone else will. There was a crucial point in the game when we were down six. We dump the ball down to Dobbins and he blows a two, three foot layup. [Oakland] gets out in transition, hits a 3-pointer and gets fouled and makes the free throw. If he hits that layup we're down four, but now we're down 10. That's a six point swing on one play."

Looking at Dobbins points and rebounds numbers, he had 10 and eight, respectively. But he only went 4-9 from the field and had three turnovers in more than 30 minutes of play. There were a few times when he was the last guy up the court on made baskets by Oakland. There were times when he couldn't establish position in the post when Oakland was playing a 3-2 zone. And he didn't convert on two or three baskets that were within five feet of the rim. When Carlos Medlock went down for the season, it was supposed to be Bowdry/Dobbins, 1-2 punch, bada bing-bada boom. But no dice. Bowdry is doing all he can to keep this team afloat until the MAC season rolls around, but a 2-9 record going into the break doesn't cut it.

Other notes: I really liked what I saw out of Will Cooper. He didn't shoot well from the field, but the guy is super energy. He had three blocks and a steal, all of which were hustle plays (rotating on defense and playing passing lanes). He also had eight points, and the mid-range jumpers he hit would've been timely had the rest of his team (not just him, Bowdry and Tyler Jones) been playing at his level.

Swingman and lone 3-point threat Zane Gay didn't suit up for the game. According to Ramsey, Gay severly sprained right his ankle the morning of the game and was on crutches and had a cast on his foot.

"It was the worst sprain I've ever seen," Ramsey said. "It was the size of a grapefruit or a softball right after it happened."

Ron English Named New EMU Football Coach

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VPtdgV-ge3g/SVASyw9SvFI/AAAAAAAAALY/ffNYY8MEmmI/s320/ronenglish.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282743026250333266" />
Former Louisville Cardinal and University of Michigan defensive coordinator Ron English was named as the head football coach at EMU today during a 1 pm press conference in the atrium of Eastern's Convocation Center.

English, whose Cardinals were in the top 30 in total defense and top 10 in defensive scoring thru the first 8 weeks of this past season, will bring in a tough, aggresive style of play that Eastern was missing for the first four years and 10 games of the Jeff Genyk era.

English said today that he knows Eastern will return a key offensive core that allowed Andy Schmitt to excel last season, but it's the defense that has been the achillies heel of the Eagles.

"We've got a long way to go on defense," English said. "But I'm not going to force my system. I'm going to alter my methods to fit the personnel we have. I'm passionate about turning this program around and I'm going to turn it around quickly."

English's passion was one thing EMU Athletic Director Dr. Derrick Gragg said was influential in appointing the new coach.

"His passion for the game of football, for the young men he coaches and his passion for doing things the right way in order to turn this football team around let me know that he was the perfect hire. Andy (Schmitt) was another guy who loved Ron's passion. As soon as Ron left the room, Andy said that Ron was a guy he really wanted to play for. That means a lot coming from the starting quarterback."

Former U of M head coach Lloyd Carr was an unpaid assistant in the recruiting process. Dr. Gragg mentioned that there were eight potential candidates for the job, four of whom were from the state of Michigan and one of whom withdrew his candidacy prior to his interview.

Personally, I'm "cautiously optimistic" about the hiring of English. He's got a good connection with so many high school coaches in the state due to his five years at Michigan. He's lived in Washtenaw county for nearly six years. He's a change of pace from Genyk. He's got 15 years of coaching experience. And he's coached on a very high level as Big 10 and Big East coordinator. That's where my optimism lies. My cautiousness lies in the fact that Eastern still doesn't have the personnel on the field yet to effectively compete against the top teams in the MAC. Scouts that English will be going after will be a tough sign as Eastern hasn't been able to fill Rynearson, and the stain Genyk and his predecessor Jeff Woodruff left aren't easily removable. The addage "Winning cures all" isn't a fallacy. Let's hope English takes that to heart.

GOOOOOOOOOOO EAGLES!!!

"The Iceman" receives honorary degree from EMU

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v22.nonxt6.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D9cb449749e3fc4f8%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330358240%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D462C8805EC04447177A2229D226F05A29E17C2C3.B2FB665ED93218AF549CE2F2125B055DF545E62%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D9cb449749e3fc4f8%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DdnpBqcfJQHd5a9avvBofrzvdFVQ&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" /> George "The Iceman" Gervin received an honorary BS degree from EMU on Saturday during halftime of the men's basketball game against St. Bonaventure. I recorded the presentation from my phone, so I apologize for the lack in quality and the occasional play by play commenting, but I was excited to see a living legend!

Gervin stresses education in his brief acceptance speech, but as you can see from the video, his message didn't reach many. I mean, there may have been 300 people in attendance...I'm confident there were more people at my high school basketball games. I just don't understand how people missed this?!

I was at the Convo when EMU retired Grant Long's jersey and the entire lower bowl was packed. No offense to Grant Long, he was an amazing player at EMU and in the NBA, but George Gervin is one of the NBA's 50 greatest players of all time. That's on the same list as Jordan, Magic, and Chamberlin.

Was it the snow? Did you not know about it? Did you simply not care to see Gervin?

Anyhow, check out the video, listen closely to Gervin's message and the announcer's intro for a complete background of his accomplishments. Oh, and in case you like the little you hear about Gervin, he'll be January's Alumnus Spotlight in emYOU! I'd like to get some input back from YOU as to what you've been into lately. When I sit back and think about everything, it's all a little overwhelming. I mean, I basically have a part time job updating my Facebook, Myspace, and Linkedin pages, not to mention emYOU!'s Twitter, Squidoo, Picasa.
Oh, and when I have free time, I like to update the blog!

Luckily I've found a few sites/applications that keep me from docking overtime: twitterberry for my Blackberry and ping.fm which allows me to update all my social networks from one source.

So, that's where I spend most of my time on my computer, what do you do? I'm sorry, let me re-phrase that, what are you doing in Ypsi this weekend?

I've got a nice little weekend planned, myself. Like most people, my weekend starts tonight! After taking a week off due to Thanksgiving, College Night at Divine will resume as the best place to be on a Thursday night. It'll be the tip of the iceberg of an amazing Friday and Saturday night.

Friday: Downtown Ypsi is having an area wide Starlight Shopping Spree that will take place Friday and Saturday night. All the local businesses will be open from regular business hours until late in the evening anywhere from 9pm-midnight! Christmas carolers will accompany refreshments and finger foods throughout downtown stores. If you've never shopped in Ypsi before this is the perfect opportunity to grab some cool gifts for friends and family as well as contribute to the Ypsilanti community. As students, you should go out and see what's here. I promise you'll be happily surprised!

Saturday: One of my personal favorite annual events, The Shadow Art Fair, will take place at the Corner Brewery from 12pm-12am, featuring local "indie" vendors. Cover is 2 pennies...that should tell you the kind of fun you'll have. I will definitely be there. Later on in the evening The Elbow Room will host the Rock n Rummage sale. You can pick up some unique, one of a kind gifts, grab a couple brews and enjoy. Free admission, that's another beer for you.

That's my weekend. So, I'll ask again, What are you doing in Ypsi this weekend?

December, the Holiday Issue hits campus!!

Yesterday saw the release of our December issue on campus and it will be fully distributed throughout Ypsi by the end of the day today. Be sure to pick one up!!

emyouthemagazine.com will be fully updated no later than tomorrow. That means while you're wasting 2 hours in the computer lab stalking people on Facebook waiting for your next class to start, you can be out in Ypsi shopping for Holiday gifts.

Check out The Rocket and VGKids, for all your Ypsi gear and novelty items. Clover Computers for that "new to you" laptop or desktop. Wireless Toyz has the new Blackberry your girlfriend wants. While your reheating left-overs and relaxing this weekend, I thought I'd fill everyone in on a website I found this year and something I'm definitely thank full for; pandora.

Whether you listen to music at the library, a coffee shop, your apartment or dorm room...you and I both know your iTunes playlist gets lame. Check out www.pandora.com, if you haven't already. You list the bands you like and create your own radio station, commercial free of course. Not only will pandora play the bands you love, but it will search through their data base and play bands they think you'll like! I've discovered a bunch of great music through pandora and pretty much tune in everyday. Check it out!

Also, check out last.fm. Similar to pandora, you can listen to music for FREE. For example, when the new Kings of Leon cd came out, I went to last.fm and listened to the whole cd, which I later bought...

www.emyouthemagazine.com

It's simply...the biggest bar night of the year!

Ah...the day has finally come! It's officially the biggest bar night of 2008! Where will you be at 1:30 tomorrow morning? Here's why I ask...

I was at the Elbow Room last night with a couple friends and we were all talking about what was going on for tonight...crickets... For some reason this year doesn't seem to have the same pizazz or excitement about the night before Thanksgiving. I'm not sure if it's because the economy is shit, people are too busy with other stuff going on, or because this personal holiday has lost it's luster??

Well...I'm sure I'll find myself back at the Elbow Room, probably swing by Pub for a minute, walk down to Depot Town in search of drink specials...who knows, maybe I'll meet up with some friends in A2 or roam out to Royal Oak. I'm a dude, so it'll definitely be a last minute decision. But enough about me, I want to know what you're doing tonight.

(If you're not going out because you're getting up early to go kill bambi, save it please, and have fun sitting in the woods...by yourself...in the cold...not moving or making a sound...smelling like deer pee.)

www.emyouthemagazine.com

EMU Football loses heartbreaker.

I seem to make it out to every Eastern home game and win or lose, I always leave entertained...(or still tipsy from the tailgate). Yesterday was no different. While on the road in Philly, visiting Temple, the Eagles lost a shootout 55-52. Quarterback, Andy Schmitt set a couple school records for passing and an NCAA record for most pass attempts without an interception. Check out www.emueagles.com for the full story and all the record breaking statistics.

Here's a question: When was the last time a team rolled up 52 points and lost?

Eastern's next and last game will be played at home this Friday against MAC rival CMU, with a 12:00 pm kickoff. It's fan appreciation day, and that means all tickets are FREE for everyone! Why should you go, other than the obvious reasons to support your squad? It beats pulling an all nighter to stand in line for 10 hours just to get 50% off that plasma TV that you both can't afford and can't afford to fix, when it breaks in 2 months.

Also, CMU quarterback Dan Lefevour, a junior, will be playing on Sundays some day. It'll be a fun match up to watch as our NFL bound linebacker Daniel Holtzclaw preys on Lefevour all afternoon.

Still Recovering!

Whew...what a night! The Magazine. We've got a full line up for December. Exclusive interviews with Bruce T. Halle...yeah, the multi-kazillionaire that the EMU library is named after and James Franco (Spiderman, Knocked Up) talks about his latest role in Milk. Student Spotlight Steve Lachance, a ton of great holiday party ideas, and a number of cheap gifts you can grab locally here in Ypsi and A2 will make the Holiday Issue a must read for the upcoming Holiday season.

We're still looking for spotlight nominations for upcoming issues: Student, Professor, Alumni, Student Orgs, and Businesses. If you have any suggestions/comments/feedback to help us improve emYOU!
