George "The Iceman" Gervin received an honorary BS degree from EMU on Saturday during halftime of the men's basketball game against St. Bonaventure. I recorded the presentation from my phone, so I apologize for the lack in quality and the occasional play by play commenting, but I was excited to see a living legend!
Gervin stresses education in his brief acceptance speech, but as you can see from the video, his message didn't reach many. I mean, there may have been 300 people in attendance...I'm confident there were more people at my high school basketball games. I just don't understand how people missed this?!
I was at the Convo when EMU retired Grant Long's jersey and the entire lower bowl was packed. No offense to Grant Long, he was an amazing player at EMU and in the NBA, but George Gervin is one of the NBA's 50 greatest players of all time. That's on the same list as Jordan, Magic, and Chamberlin.
Was it the snow? Did you not know about it? Did you simply not care to see Gervin?
Anyhow, check out the video, listen closely to Gervin's message and the announcer's intro for a complete background of his accomplishments. Oh, and in case you like the little you hear about Gervin, he'll be January's Alumnus Spotlight in emYOU! The Magazine, so you can read more about him when you get back from break!
